When the Circus Comes to the Table: How We Brought a Circus Tea Party to Life for 300 Guests

Some clients arrive with a brief and a guest count. Others arrive with a vision. When Building Bridges Across the River, a Washington, DC nonprofit, came to Founding Farmers Co. Catering & Events with a circus tea party concept for 300 guests, including families and children, we knew this was the latter.
The ask: create a celebration that felt like stepping inside the big top, with the warmth and wonder of a tea party layered in. What followed was a full service catering event in DC that put our team's creativity and operational precision to the test, and one of the most joyful events we've had the privilege of producing.
Full Service Catering in Washington, DC: Executing a Vision at Scale
Executing a themed event for 300 guests takes more than a creative menu. It takes a team that understands how every detail, from the first bite to the last pour, shapes what guests carry home with them.
Our team worked closely with Building Bridges Across the River to build out a full service program that matched the energy in the room. As aerialists performed overhead, jugglers worked the floor, and clowns delighted the youngest guests, our team managed every food and beverage touchpoint behind the scenes, so the client could stay fully present in the moment.
This is what full service catering in the DC metro area actually looks like: a partner invested in the outcome.
Scratch-Made Menu for 300: Tea Sandwiches, Sweets, and Savory Bites
The centerpiece was a Carnival of Treats display: a three-tiered tower anchored by tea sandwiches and savory bites and crowned with sweet finishes that felt festive without tipping into kitsch.
Savory highlights included Banana & Marshmallow Fluff Tea Sandwiches, Baked Brie & Seasonal Jam Puffs, Cucumber Cups with red beet hummus and toasted seeds, and Charcuterie Skewers with prosciutto, strawberry, brie, and aged provolone. Scratch-made Buttermilk Biscuits were served with North Dakota honey butter and house preserves, a small detail rooted in something larger: Founding Farmers Co. Catering & Events is majority owned by American family farmers, including the North Dakota Farmers Union, and the ingredients we source reflect that relationship directly.
For sweets: Vanilla Cheesecake Bites, Assorted Mini Jefferson Filled Donuts with crème brûlée, strawberries and cream, and bananas foster, and Animal Cookies that landed perfectly for the youngest guests in the room.
Every item on the menu was made from scratch using high-quality ingredients sourced from farmers and producers we know and trust. That is not a marketing line; it is how we operate. It’s what it means to be farmer owned. We are working to unbundle the industrial supply chain and earn family farmers a larger share of the food dollar. With every event, we are also giving back to our farmer owners.
Coffee Station, Hot Cocoa Bar, and Beverage Service for Large Events
The beverage program was built with the same intentionality as the food. A dedicated Coffee Station featured our house-roasted, sustainably sourced Founding Farmers Friendship Blend, a medium roast with notes of nuts, toffee, and cocoa, crafted from Central and South American beans. Alongside it, a table side beverage service offered hot chocolate topped with mini marshmallows and peppermint chips, and a curated hot tea selection, including Crescent Green, Sunstone Black, and Rosella Herbal decaf.
The bar featured sparkling and white wine provided by the host, with Founding Farmers Co. Catering & Events managing service throughout, alongside a full non-alcoholic program including Coca-Cola, Ginger Ale, and still and sparkling mineral water.
For large-scale events in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region, building a cohesive beverage program that serves guests across age groups and preferences is one of the most underestimated pieces of a well-run event. We take it seriously.
How We Help DC Clients Bring Creative Event Visions to Life
Events like this one are a reminder of what full service catering is for. The menu is the foundation, but it is the team, the attention to detail, and the genuine investment in a client's creative vision that turns a well-catered gathering into a memorable one.
Whether you are planning a nonprofit gala, a corporate luncheon, a wedding reception, or a celebration with a concept all your own, Founding Farmers Co. Catering & Events serves the Washington, DC metro area, including Maryland and Virginia, and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania with scratch-made food, a best-in-class beverage program, and a team known for warmth and precision.
If you have a vision, we would love to help you bring it to life.
